Mayor Garcetti celebrates new leadership at two city departments

LOS ANGELES – Mayor Eric Garcetti celebrates the appointment of two new department leaders: Jaime H. Pacheco-Orozco as General Manager of the Department of Aging and Jimmy Kim as General Manager of the Department of Recreation and Parks.

“Los Angeles deserves leaders who uphold the highest standards of public service, and are passionate about improving every day life for every Angeleno,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Jaime and Jimmy are proven leaders, with proven track records delivering results for Los Angeles. I’m proud to welcome them into these new positions, and I have no doubt they will serve the city with integrity and compassion. ”

Jaime H. Pacheco-Orozco has served the City of Los Angeles for over twenty years, the last three as Assistant Executive Director of the Department of Disability. Previously, he served as the Division Chief of the City’s Workforce Development System through which he developed tools and programs to better serve older working adults, adults and youth with disabilities, and English language learners, among other demographics.

As General Manager of the Department of Aging, Pacheco-Orozco will oversee all programs and services managed by the department including senior meals and older adult-working programs. He will replace the interim General Manager Mariella Freire-Reyes on July 5, 2022.

“I am excited and honored by this opportunity,” said Jaime H. Pacheco-Orozco. “I believe every Angeleno whether old, young, or with a disability deserves equal opportunity to grow professionally and personally. Through this role, I will put City resources to work to ensure no one, despite of age, gets left behind. I look forward to continuing to work for this great City of Angels. “

Jimmy Kim has served the City of Los Angeles and the Department of Recreation and Parks for over twenty-six years through various leadership positions. He began his career with the department as a junior lifeguard through the Summer Youth Employment program in 1995, he then went on to hold several other part-time positions before initiating full-time employment. He has held various roles within the department in the Aquatic Division, Lifeguard Academies, and served as the department’s Homeless Strategy Coordinator and Resilience Officer among other roles. Kim served over the last year as the Assistant General Manager of Recreation Services, overseeing 184 recreation centers, 51 aquatic centers and 30 senior centers.

As General Manager of the Department of Recreation and Parks, Kim will manage over 16,000 acres of parkland, along with overseeing recreational, social and cultural programs at 444 park sites in every Los Angeles neighborhood. He will replace the current General Manager Mike Shull on July 3, 2022, upon council confirmation.

“For the last 26 years, I have grown as part of this hard working community of Recreation and Parks employees,” said Jimmy Kim. “I am both humbled and honored to be appointed by Mayor Garcetti to lead this department towards realizing our vision of a sustainable park system, equitable access, and quality programming for all Angelenos and visitors to enjoy. “
