In 2021, there were about 74 million people in the EU aged 15 to 74 employed in science and technology, an increase of 3% compared with 2020 and 21% compared with 2011.

An analysis by age shows that more than half (53.3% or 9.4 million) of the 17.6 million young people aged 25 to 34 were working in science and technology in 2021. In a decade, the number of women working in this field increased by 14.8%, versus the +1.2 million women. By comparison, the number of men in this area increased by 10.8% since 2011 to 8.2 million in 2021.

In 2021, 45% of the 68.3 million people aged 25 to 64 were employed in science and technology in the EU. People between 45 and 64 years old (more than 30.8 million), 29% were between 35 and 44 years old (19.9 million). and 26% were people aged 25 to 34 (17.6 million).
